ROCKY BUSINESS: EBONYI ASSEMBLY SHUTS DOWN ILLEGAL QUARRIES, GRILLS FIRMS OVER CHILD LABOUR CLAIMS

The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has taken decisive action against alleged illegal quarry operations in the state, summoning several companies operating at the Ezza-Inyimagu quarry pit in Izzi Local Government Area over a range of serious allegations.
The companies are accused of operating without signposts, company names, or registration, in clear violation of the state’s mining regulations. More alarmingly, there are reports that minors from nearby communities are being recruited to work in the hazardous quarry environment.
The summons was issued by the House Committee on Solid Mineral Development, chaired by Hon. Ifeanyi Nwakpu, who also ordered an immediate suspension of all quarry activities at the site until further notice.
“These companies must explain their operations, why they are not registered, why they operate in secrecy, and why children are allegedly working in their pits,” Hon. Nwakpu stated.
What’s at Stake?
The Assembly has demanded that the companies appear before the committee on Thursday, to provide clarity on their licensing status, safety procedures, and labour practices.
In the meantime, the committee has mandated a full shutdown of operations pending a thorough review and compliance with the state’s mining and safety laws.
Cracking Down on Lawless Mining
This move underscores the Assembly’s resolve to curb illegal mining practices, protect the welfare of local communities, and safeguard the rights of children. It also raises wider concerns about unregulated extractive activities and the lack of oversight that allows such operations to thrive.
The Assembly's action sends a strong message that economic activity must not come at the expense of human dignity, legal compliance, or environmental safety.
